Collection contains records and legal documents relating to the Hocking Valley Salt Company and Pruden's other business interests in Athens County; personal letters and correspondence of the Pruden family; and a number of letters written by Silas Pruden (son of Samuel) between May and December of 1861. Correspondents include John Brough (Civil War Governor of Ohio), Charles H. Grosvenor (Civil War General and politician), C.O. Martin (Member of Congress), and Jacob Lindley (President of Ohio University).

Charles Henry Grosvenor (CHG) was an attorney, a general in the Union Army during the Civil War, and a United States Congress representative for 20 years. CHG grew up in Athens, Ohio. He was responsible for persuading Andrew Carnegie to provide funds for a library at Ohio University. Constance Leete (CL) is his granddaughter through his second wife Louise Currier.
